Introducing the first Ocean Protocol privacy-preserving data challenge: Air Quality in Catalunya

This post was originally published here

Ocean Protocol is announcing a new data challenge focused on tackling one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: air pollution.

This challenge is using Compute-to-Data, Ocean’s privacy-preserving computation, to effectively allow participants to run compute jobs on the data provided and get useful compute results.

With a total prize pool of $6,000 payable in OCEAN, we’re calling all data scientists, environmental experts, and anyone who is passionate about making a positive impact on the environment to explore the data provided, and join us in finding innovative solutions.

Air pollution is a serious health concern that affects millions of people worldwide with a range of health problems. These include respiratory issues, heart disease, and stroke–causing 7 million premature deaths each year. The Air Pollution challenge is a great opportunity for individuals and teams to use their skills and creativity to make a real-world impact. Participants are encouraged to use Ocean Protocol’s technology to decentralize access to their algorithms, and share their solutions with privacy-preserving technology.

Through this challenge, we aim to analyze the evolution of air pollutants in Catalunya (i.e. Catalonia) over the past three decades and develop algorithms to predict air pollutant concentrations.

You are asked to perform three tasks:

  1. Make a global analysis of the air quality in Catalunya.
  2. Build algorithms to predict the concentration of pollutants in the air using Ocean Protocol’s Compute-to-Data technology.
  3. Write a report presenting your approach, results, conclusions and recommendations.

Participants can access the dataset provided for this challenge from the Ocean Market by clicking the following link and downloading the published data asset. The same dataset can also be used through Compute-to-Data by the algorithm of your choice at the following address.

The submission deadline is February 14 @ 23:59 PM UTC.

This challenge is hosted on DesightsAI.

All valid non-winning entries submitted will receive an award of 500 OCEAN tokens.

The evaluation panel will determine if entries submitted are valid, submitted in good faith, and meet minimum requirements as specified in the challenge description.

About Ocean Protocol

Ocean Protocol is a decentralized data-sharing ecosystem spearheading the movement to unlock a New Data Economy, break down data silos, and open access to quality data. Ocean’s intuitive marketplace technology allows data to be published, discovered, and consumed in a secure, privacy-preserving manner by giving power back to data owners, Ocean resolves the tradeoff between using private data and the risks of exposing it.
